Christmas Comes Early to Mama

“Mama, I have an interesting math problem we could do! In ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas,’ the person gets x animals y number of times, and so on, right? So we could figure out how many of each kind of thing they get after the twelve days are up, and then try to see if there’s a formula for the pattern.”

Our family once sung “The Cumulative Twelve Days of Christmas” for a holiday talent show. “By the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: five gold rings, eight calling birds, nine french hens, eight turtle doves, and five partridges in their pear trees.” Etc. We made up cue cards so the audience could sing along.
